30 Paintings in 30 Days – Day 9
They’re back!! The Madballs have returned to the 30 Day challenge. This ball is named Skull Face (of course). This is another 5″x7″ ink, watercolor and oil painting on a gesso board, just like the other Madballs that I have done so far.

30 Paintings in 30 Days – Day 8
Today is a big day. I’m making the drive from the Bay Area into Hollywood to go to the Hollywood Bowl to see a live version of The Muppet Show! It’s very exciting and something I never would have thought possible. That’s why I did this painting today. It is a 5″x7″ ink and oil painting on a smooth artist panel.

30 Paintings in 30 Days- Day 6

5″x7″ oil paint and ink on a linen panel

30 Paintings in 30 Days – Day 6
Ink and oil paint on a linen panel. Today’s painting is a quick little 5″x7″ Marilyn Monroe portrait. I also thought I would bust out some of the linen panels I had. And I have been wanting to try these out for a while. And on first try I was not pleased with it. There is way too much texture for my taste. I figured they would be smooth panels but you live you learn.

30 Paintings in 30 Days- Day 4

Ink, watercolor and oil painting on illustration board

Decided to go back to doing a portrait today. This one fought me quite bit and probably took longer than I would like. I started the drawing last night and hoped to get some of the underpainting done but that did not happen. But it’s finally finished. Time to plan the next one.

30 Paintings in 30 Days- Day 3

30 Paintings in 30 Paintings day 3
Today’s painting almost did not happen which would be disappointing since it’s only the third day. But as my Bay Area friends know, it’s been stupidly hot these last few days. And being in a house with no air conditioning sitting under lights and painting does not come easy. But, I’m forcing myself to work tonight.
This painting is another Madballs painting. This lovely is named Aargh. It is a 5″x7″ ink, watercolor and oil painting on a gesso board. #madballs #aargh #30paintingsin30days #oil #painting #watercolor #ink #art #artist #painter #illustration #1980s #ilovethe80s #toys #80stoys

30 Paintings in 30 Days 2017- Day 1

Moleskin oil painting 2017

It’s September again and that means the 30 Paintings in 30 Days challenge is upon us.  And, I thought I would give it a go.  I believe this is my third time and I did complete 30 paintings on the last two challenges.  That did not come easy and this time looks to be even more challenging.  Not only will I be away on a trip 3 days next week, I’m also creating work for a one man show in Oakland, CA on October 7th.  And to finish off October, I’m tabling at my first convention, Famous Monsters of Filmland-Halloween Bash in San Jose, CA.

So, there will be quite a bit of stress going on this September.  But, I will try not to drive myself too crazy with this 30 day challenge.  My original idea was to do 30 portraits, in oil paint, in a Moleskin journal.  I figured it would be a good size and challenge to try for this.  Here is the image of the drawing prepainted.

This is a portrait painting of the actress, Jennifer Connelly.  I have always been a fan of her from when I first watched the movie, Labyrinth and The Rocketeer(2 of my favorite movies).  She also has a very classic Hollywood, beauty look that is very appealing.  Those are some of the reasons why I chose to paint her.  And that is a theme I plan to use with these Moleskin journal paintings.

But, I learned something important with this painting.  Since I am not really painting ahead, These paintings wont dry in time to be scanned and posted.  It looks like I’m going to have to pepper in some other types of paintings to be able to do this.  Well, I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.

She Changed Her Mind (And Her Feelings For Me)

This is the last painting for the 30 Paintings in 30 Days challenge.  I made it through the whole month and didn’t miss a day.  While, I’m proud that I hit the 30 paintings mark, I’m not sure I am completely happy with the results.  I could see that my interest was waning in the last week or so with most paintings.  And a lot of it was because I was growing bored with doing quick paintings. I did enjoy working with watercolor paints quite a bit this month and I’m not sure where to go next because I also would like to do more oil paintings (like today’s painting) and gouache.  I was hoping at the end of this challenge I would walk away knowing what paint media I would like to go to in the future.  Today’s painting is one that has been around for a couple of months and it has been a struggle.  I struggled with the subject matter and the technique.  But, I made myself finish it last night  just in case I wussed out on sharing it today.

I can say that for October, I will be participating in challenge of doing an ink drawing everyday of the month.  It’s an online challenge called Inktober.  Much like the 30 Days challenge, I’m heading into it by the seat of my pants, with nothing predrawn.  So, we will see what comes out of it.
