9″X12″ Gouache paint on illustration board
Here is a scene from the great version of the Robin Hood story that Disney created. Robin Hood and Little John, walking through the forest. I feel like this is another one of the great Disney films that does not get the attention it should.

This was more of a study and less of a make a good painting kind of day. I am still playing around with gouache paint, trying to decide on which I prefer more, watercolor or gouache paints. At this point I feel like I get better results with watercolor paints. And the reason why I painted a skull today? I was listening to Chris Oatley talk about how a good exercise to do is to draw a skull a day for a while so I thought I would give it a go.

For the halfway mark of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days challenge I decided to go with the main baddie from my favorite classic horror movie, The Creature From the Black Lagoon.
I have some mixed feelings about this one because of the time limit I had for the piece and the amount of detail on the Gillman’s suit. I want to get in there and draw all the scales and bumps on him but it just doesn’t make sense to do it. Not only do I have so little time to do the drawing but I also know that it will unfortunately disappear underneath the gouache paint. And that’s exactly what started to happen on this one.

From painting beauties for the last 6 days, to painting a beast.
This is a gouache painting of Frankenstein’s monster from the Universal Studios classic film, staring Boris Karloff. I’m not sure I’m completely happy with the results of this because of the gouache paints. Especially after using watercolors for the last week. I really enjoyed using watercolors, but, I think I will stick with gouache for a few more this week.

Here is X-men number 2 for this week, Mystique. While she was a bit player in the world of mutants, in the comics, the movie universe has changed that. The other big change was her look. While always blue, she was not so naked or scaley. This is a painting on illustration board and with gouache paint. For the next X-Men character we will be going away from the traditional painting and go into the digital paint world.

In preparation for seeing the new X-Men movie today, I decided to do some quick portraits of some of the characters from the more recent films. And how do you not start off with the top X-character, Wolverine? For me he is the best character in these films. Hugh Jackman plays Wolverine perfectly for me. He can play him as a crazed killer and bring it right back to guy who can drop a funny one liner and it all works. Wolverine isn’t really in the comics anymore so this is the one place I can still get my fix.
This painting was start to finish about an hour long and was painted with gouache paint on illustration board. It is 8″x8″.
I filmed the whole process and should have a speed painting video to share with everyone soon.
