30 Paintings in 30 Days-Day 23

julie-adams-23

Today’s portrait is of Julie Adams, who plays Kay in the Creature From the Black Lagoon.  It’s another watercolor painting, where I’m trying to stay close to the Zorn palette.  In the movie she is the main object of the Gillman’s attention.

October is the time of the year called Inktober, where people are doing a month’s worth of ink drawings and I’m thinking about joining in for my first time.  And the reason I bring this up is because I’m thinking that the Creature From the Black Lagoon film might be a main subject of the drawings I will do for the month.

hitchcock

Ok, it’s official, I am losing steam today.  That means I chose to go with a smaller painting today.  Which brings us this watercolor portrait of Alfred Hitchcock.

30 Paintings in 30 Days-Day 19

penguin-19

I’m not sure what made me want to paint this today but, I think it has to do with the heat wave running through the Bay Area in California.  It was ugly this weekend.  Danny DeVito as the Penguin kind of ugly.

30 Paintings in 30 Days-Day 14

frankenstein-14

From painting beauties for the last 6 days, to painting a beast.

This is a gouache painting of Frankenstein’s monster from the Universal Studios classic film, staring Boris Karloff.  I’m not sure I’m completely happy with the results of this because of the gouache paints.  Especially after using watercolors for the last week.  I really enjoyed using watercolors, but, I think I will stick with gouache for a few more this week.

30 Paintings in 30 Days-Day 6

Vincent Price

This portrait is of Vincent Price from his roll in The Fall of the House of Usher.  The film was based on an Edger Allen Poe story and directed by Roger Corman.  The film was released in 1960 and was one of many Poe stories that Price and Corman collaborated on.  It was also when Corman was actually making some fine cinema and not just doing cheap horror and sci-fi movies.

I branched out and used some blue paint along with the limited palette of my latest paintings but I did go back to painting in oils.  But, I will probably be leaving the oil paints behind for the next painting.

30 Paintings in 30 Days-Day 4

Rick Grimes TWD

This painting for the fourth day of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days is a portrait of the leader of the group of survivors on the tv show, The Walking Dead, Rick Grimes.  He’s not someone who has experienced much good luck in the time of the walker outbreak.

Once again, I’m stickimg with the limited Zorn palette of black, white yellow ocher and cad red oil paints.  This picture started off just as a pencil drawing(that you can find a photo on my Instagram account).  I felt like it got a luke warm reception and I wasn’t sure where I wanted to go with it.  Since I was planning on finishing some stuff that was laying around I figured I would slap some paint on it.

30 Paintings in 30 Days…Again…Day 1

Dick Tracy small

Well, here we go again.  I believe this is the third time I have taken on the 30 Paintings in 30 Days challenge at https://www.saetastudio.com/30-in-30-blog.  This time might be harder than the others because I’m coming into it without a plan.  I just recently decided to join in and I have no idea what I’m going to paint.  Usually I like to have a few pieces ready before hand to use as a cushion, but that’s not really the case this month.  One thing I am planning to do is finish some paintings that I have started but not finished.  Some of these will include some larger paintings.  Another idea I have to do some studies of work from artists I admire.  So, this month might be quite the hodge podge of pieces.  I guess we will just roll with it.

Day 1’s painting is a 5″x6″ painting of Dick Tracy as portrayed by Warren Beatty from the 1990 film, Dick Tracy.  Its is a mix of different painting media; acrylic, gouache and oil paints.  After I did the drawing on the illustration board, I did a wash of yellow acrylic paint over the whole piece.  Over that, I used black gouache for the under painting and the rest is all oil paints.

In my mind I was thinking I wanted to go for a Norman Rockwell feel to the painting, which I don’t feel came out in the piece.  I have been watching one of Quang Ho’s instructional dvds and the brush strokes, to me, feel more like his than Rockwell’s.  That said, I did really enjoy the process of painting this piece.

Wolverine

Wolverine

In preparation for seeing the new X-Men movie today, I decided to do some quick portraits of some of the characters from the more recent films. And how do you not start off with the top X-character, Wolverine? For me he is the best character in these films. Hugh Jackman plays Wolverine perfectly for me. He can play him as a crazed killer and bring it right back to guy who can drop a funny one liner and it all works. Wolverine isn’t really in the comics anymore so this is the one place I can still get my fix.
This painting was start to finish about an hour long and was painted with gouache paint on illustration board. It is 8″x8″.
I filmed the whole process and should have a speed painting video to share with everyone soon.

Wrestlemania Week

Hogan color

This week marks the beginning of Wrestlemania week!  This year, Dallas, is the home of Wrestlemania on Sunday.  I’ve been a fan of wrestling since 1980’s and have seen many Wrestlemanias.  My first was in 1987 with Wrestlemania 3.  Which to this day is still my favorite Wrestlemania.  I will still go back and rewatch it and it brings me right back to that moment.  The main event of that night was Hulk Hogan vs Andre the Giant.  It really didn’t get much bigger than that match!  Hogan was featured in quite a few Mania matches but few lived up to the hype like this match did.  It didn’t hurt that I was a huge Hulk Hogan fan back then.  I try to not let all of Hogan’s personal business change my feelings about those days but it can be a little hard.  So, this drawing is a snapshot of that era of Hogan from Wrestlemania 3.  And, I will be repeating this theme of wrestlers from this time period for a little bit.

This also marks a new addition to my art work.  This piece was drawn with ink and then scanned into the computer and colored with Photoshop.  I am going to be doing more pieces this way along with my traditional paintings.  Hopefully everyone will enjoy!
