Captain Marvel and Thanos

captain-marvel thanos

Starting to do a few of these smaller 5″x7″ish sized ink and watercolor paintings. I thought it could be fun to do some different type of characters from all different kinds of media. Today’s paintings are of two Marvel Comics characters, Captain Marvel and his arch foe, Thanos.
Captain Marvel is character that died in the early 1980s, is one of my favorite characters. And is also one of the few heroes that has not been brought back from the dead. He died from cancer and not by the hands of a villain, in The Death of Captain Marvel graphic novel.
Thanos is one of the most powerful villains in the Marvel universe and in the 90’s was causing many a problem for the characters in Marvel. And, that is what is ramping up in the next 2 Avengers movies.
Both of these paintings are for sale, $30 each or both for $50.

hitchcock

Ok, it’s official, I am losing steam today.  That means I chose to go with a smaller painting today.  Which brings us this watercolor portrait of Alfred Hitchcock.

30 Paintings in 30 Days-Day 6

Vincent Price

This portrait is of Vincent Price from his roll in The Fall of the House of Usher.  The film was based on an Edger Allen Poe story and directed by Roger Corman.  The film was released in 1960 and was one of many Poe stories that Price and Corman collaborated on.  It was also when Corman was actually making some fine cinema and not just doing cheap horror and sci-fi movies.

I branched out and used some blue paint along with the limited palette of my latest paintings but I did go back to painting in oils.  But, I will probably be leaving the oil paints behind for the next painting.

30 Paintings in 30 Days-Day 4

Rick Grimes TWD

This painting for the fourth day of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days is a portrait of the leader of the group of survivors on the tv show, The Walking Dead, Rick Grimes.  He’s not someone who has experienced much good luck in the time of the walker outbreak.

Once again, I’m stickimg with the limited Zorn palette of black, white yellow ocher and cad red oil paints.  This picture started off just as a pencil drawing(that you can find a photo on my Instagram account).  I felt like it got a luke warm reception and I wasn’t sure where I wanted to go with it.  Since I was planning on finishing some stuff that was laying around I figured I would slap some paint on it.

The Batman

Day 3 is here and so is The Batman.  From out of the shadows and fog of Gotham City he watches.  This is another painting using the same limited palette that was used on the last two paintings.

30 Paintings in 30 Days-Day 2

Mola Ram

Today’s painting is a portrait of Mola Ram, the big baddie from the Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom film.  I have always been a huge fan of that film and the look of Mola Ram has always intrigued me.  Plus, the guy can reach into your chest and pull out your heart and show it to you.  Now that’s a crazy villain!  The ending section of that film where Indy goes back to the mines to free the kids is my favorite section of any of the Indiana Jones films.

For the painting process of this painting I went back to my comfort level and did this one with thin layers.  After completing the drawing I laid in the black with no medium to thin it out.  But, the rest is all painted with  thin layers of oil.  And then capped it off with some white highlights.  And for this painting I used the Zorn palette choices when picking my colors, which means I only used black, white, cad red and yellow ochre.  The Zorn palette is one I have been playing around with lately and will be popping up again this month.

30 Paintings in 30 Days…Again…Day 1

Dick Tracy small

Well, here we go again.  I believe this is the third time I have taken on the 30 Paintings in 30 Days challenge at https://www.saetastudio.com/30-in-30-blog.  This time might be harder than the others because I’m coming into it without a plan.  I just recently decided to join in and I have no idea what I’m going to paint.  Usually I like to have a few pieces ready before hand to use as a cushion, but that’s not really the case this month.  One thing I am planning to do is finish some paintings that I have started but not finished.  Some of these will include some larger paintings.  Another idea I have to do some studies of work from artists I admire.  So, this month might be quite the hodge podge of pieces.  I guess we will just roll with it.

Day 1’s painting is a 5″x6″ painting of Dick Tracy as portrayed by Warren Beatty from the 1990 film, Dick Tracy.  Its is a mix of different painting media; acrylic, gouache and oil paints.  After I did the drawing on the illustration board, I did a wash of yellow acrylic paint over the whole piece.  Over that, I used black gouache for the under painting and the rest is all oil paints.

In my mind I was thinking I wanted to go for a Norman Rockwell feel to the painting, which I don’t feel came out in the piece.  I have been watching one of Quang Ho’s instructional dvds and the brush strokes, to me, feel more like his than Rockwell’s.  That said, I did really enjoy the process of painting this piece.

Jim and Kermit- Day 25- 30 Paintings in 30 Days

5"x7" ink and watercolor painting on illustration board
5″x7″ ink and watercolor painting on illustration board

Here we go with the last week of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days challenge.  I felt a little torn about the amount of work I did this weekend.  Friday and Saturday were not my most productive of days.  Which meant that I had to work harder to make up for it.  I knew that I wanted this one for Monday because we can all use a little goodness on Monday.  And what is better than a moment with Jim Henson and his greatest contribution to the world, Kermit the Frog.

And, as the we get ready to start the month of February, I’m starting to plan on what I will be doing for that month.  Right now I’m going with the Valentine’s Day theme and will be bringing the love.  Where that leads, we will all have to wait and see.
