30 Paintings in 30 Days-Day 2

Mola Ram

Today’s painting is a portrait of Mola Ram, the big baddie from the Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom film.  I have always been a huge fan of that film and the look of Mola Ram has always intrigued me.  Plus, the guy can reach into your chest and pull out your heart and show it to you.  Now that’s a crazy villain!  The ending section of that film where Indy goes back to the mines to free the kids is my favorite section of any of the Indiana Jones films.

For the painting process of this painting I went back to my comfort level and did this one with thin layers.  After completing the drawing I laid in the black with no medium to thin it out.  But, the rest is all painted with  thin layers of oil.  And then capped it off with some white highlights.  And for this painting I used the Zorn palette choices when picking my colors, which means I only used black, white, cad red and yellow ochre.  The Zorn palette is one I have been playing around with lately and will be popping up again this month.

30 Paintings in 30 Days…Again…Day 1

Dick Tracy small

Well, here we go again.  I believe this is the third time I have taken on the 30 Paintings in 30 Days challenge at https://www.saetastudio.com/30-in-30-blog.  This time might be harder than the others because I’m coming into it without a plan.  I just recently decided to join in and I have no idea what I’m going to paint.  Usually I like to have a few pieces ready before hand to use as a cushion, but that’s not really the case this month.  One thing I am planning to do is finish some paintings that I have started but not finished.  Some of these will include some larger paintings.  Another idea I have to do some studies of work from artists I admire.  So, this month might be quite the hodge podge of pieces.  I guess we will just roll with it.

Day 1’s painting is a 5″x6″ painting of Dick Tracy as portrayed by Warren Beatty from the 1990 film, Dick Tracy.  Its is a mix of different painting media; acrylic, gouache and oil paints.  After I did the drawing on the illustration board, I did a wash of yellow acrylic paint over the whole piece.  Over that, I used black gouache for the under painting and the rest is all oil paints.

In my mind I was thinking I wanted to go for a Norman Rockwell feel to the painting, which I don’t feel came out in the piece.  I have been watching one of Quang Ho’s instructional dvds and the brush strokes, to me, feel more like his than Rockwell’s.  That said, I did really enjoy the process of painting this piece.

Mystique

Mystique

Here is X-men number 2 for this week, Mystique.  While she was a bit player in the world of mutants, in the comics, the movie universe has changed that.  The other big change was her look.  While always blue, she was not so naked or scaley.  This is a painting on illustration board and with gouache paint.  For the next X-Men character we will be going away from the traditional painting and go into the digital paint world.

Wolverine

Wolverine

In preparation for seeing the new X-Men movie today, I decided to do some quick portraits of some of the characters from the more recent films. And how do you not start off with the top X-character, Wolverine? For me he is the best character in these films. Hugh Jackman plays Wolverine perfectly for me. He can play him as a crazed killer and bring it right back to guy who can drop a funny one liner and it all works. Wolverine isn’t really in the comics anymore so this is the one place I can still get my fix.
This painting was start to finish about an hour long and was painted with gouache paint on illustration board. It is 8″x8″.
I filmed the whole process and should have a speed painting video to share with everyone soon.
